SUPPLYING METALS TO THE MARINE AND SHIPBUILDING SECTOR

MG Metals are fully aware that cargo ships, naval ships and cruise ships must be built with durable marine grade metals. We are also aware that your chosen metals and metal alloys must be able to withstand the corrosive effects of saltwater.

We recommend the following marine grade metals, or alternatively feel free to contact us where a member of our knowledgeable team will be on hand to assist.

    MARINE GRADE METALS

The following are the metals that are most likely to withstand the threats of the sea:

    ALUMINIUM

Aluminium is one of the most used marine metals and is typically used to build the body of a ship. This is in part to its high strength and durability for its relatively low weight. Combined with chromium, magnesium or silicon alloys aluminium can resist corrosion.

It’s great across all forms of shipbuilding, docks and shipyard infrastructure.

    STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless Steel contains molybdenum which is great in helping resist corrosion caused by saltwater. It’s the ideal metal for boat propeller shafts, storage vessels, marine fittings and shipfitting.

    BRONZE

Bronze and its aluminium alloy were created for marine use due to its tarnish and corrosion resistance and its low oxidation rates at high temperatures. The combination is also great to fight off algae, mussels and similar organisms.

It’s for these reasons why bronze is a popular metal used for boat propellers, pipes and marine fasteners.

    BRASS

Marine or naval Brass is often combined with tin, zinc or lead to enhance its ability in the sea. Tin and zinc are great for corrosion resistance, while lead helps improve the metal’s motion aspects.

As Brass can also withstand extreme heat, it’s a metal for piping as well as shafting, marine fastener, motors and pumps.

    COPPER

Copper provides good resistance for corrosion, plus when combined with nickel and manganese it can become strong and durable. Copper also is resistant to biofouling and can fight off the threat of barnacles, algae and similar organisms.

We recommend using Copper for tubing, water lines, heat tubes, valves and desalination equipment for treating seawater.
